USNWC Trip

Camp Highlander is excited to announce a new trip this summer. Each session we will be taking campers 12 and up to the United States National Whitewater Center in Charlotte, NC. This 400 acre outdoor recreational center, is home to the world's largest recirculating river. Activities include whitewater rafting, flat water kayaking, mountain biking, climbing wall, mega zip wire, climb to zip and much more!

Cost is $195 (includes transportation, ticket, snack, lunch & dinner) To sign you child up contact the camp office.

2010 Camp Highlander Book Club

We are happy to announce the books for this summer's 2010 Camp Highlander Book Club. Campers or staff can join us every Camper Choice Wednesday during 3rd period in the library to read and discuss. The final book club meeting of each session will be a party in the library where we watch the movie based on the book. Hope you'll join us!

History of Highlander

Though the cold weather has kept us indoors, we've kept very busy. Most recently we've been up to our elbows in boxes of old photographs of camp from the 1960s and 1970s. We're embarking on a big project to get these photographs organized and displayed throughout camp this summer. The largest display will be in our Lodge, where we are giving the middle room a face lift to accommodate the numerous framed photographs and photo albums. We hope you will enjoy taking a walk down Highlander's memory lane as much as we have.

Additions to the Challenge Course

Well the new elements to our challenge course are in and they look awesome. The picture to the left is of the Vertical Play Pen. We still need to install the cargo net and ropes, but as you can see it goes pretty high up (that's a ten foot ladder resting next to it...the element goes over 30 feet high)! For those of you who want to stay closer to the ground we have a new Spider Web, Wild Woozy and Pole Tire team elements that are sure to cause some excitement and new camp records.

Snowcapped Mountains

We are sure you have all been watching on the news about the blizzard weather in our area. We've been lucky that most of the storms have gone just north of us, but we've still had a consistent few inches of snow on the ground for the past few weeks. Makes for some fun sledding and snowman building when we're brave enough to go outside in the 10 degree or colder weather. So we stay inside most days working, sipping hot chocolate and thinking of all of you and the summer.

Snowing Again!!!

Just as the last of the snow was melting from the previous storm, we had another foot of snow fall last weekend. This has been the most snow Camp Highlander has seen in years, and we are enjoying the beautiful snow covered mountain. It took some convincing, but I got Gaynell to pose in the snow. He was up for meetings and definitely was wishing he was back in sunny Florida.

Camp Reunion

Thank you to all who braved the 30 degree weather to join us at Sugar Sand Park for our annual Camp Reunion. We had a blast, listening to Alex Moses play, enjoying some chicken fingers and battling out to see which gender really is the best (boys were the winners, but we have a feeling the girls will take back the honor this summer). We announced some exciting new things at camp this summer such as our yearbook, music and fishing classes as well as a new Vertical Play Pen to be added to the ropes course. Its going to be an exciting summer!!!

Camp Reunion

Join us this Sunday, January 10 from 2:30-4:30pm at Sugar Sands Park in Boca Raton, Florida for our annual camp reunion. They'll be food, announcements, games, raffle prizes and a special musical performance by Alex Moses and Matt Manning. Come visit with old camp friends. All are welcome!!!!!

Walking in a Winter Wonderland

Highlander got its first official snow this morning. There's about 4 inches on the ground right now, and it doesn't seem to be stopping anytime soon. Its absolutly beautiful to see the mountain covered in white. We've uploaded pictures to our photo gallery for all of you to share in the moment.

Just a reminder that our offices will be closed starting December 21 and will reopen on January 4, 2010.

Camp Yearbook

Camp Highlander is so excited to announce that we will be putting together a yearbook this year! Campers will have the opportunity to contribute in designing the yearbook by taking pictures, writing articles and creating layout. The cost is $30 which includes shipping and handling. We will be making the order form available on our website and in our spring pre-camp kits. It makes a great keepsake for campers, parents and alumni. Orders must be in by June 1, 2010 and yearbooks will ship out on September 15, 2010.

Well there's no mistaking it now...winter has come to our home in the mountains. We awoke this morning with the first signs of snow and frost on the trees. Nothing that won't melt away after the sun has been shining all day, but still exciting. Means that a good snowfall is not too far off.

We were busy last week in meetings discussing all the new plans for camp this summer. There are so many new additions to camp this summer that we know everyone will find something new to enjoy. Stay tuned for our winter edition of the Campfire Quarterly for all the details.

And just another reminder that our reunions are scheduled for January 9 (Alumni only) and January 10 (Camp Reunion). Everyone is welcome to join us at Sugar Sands Park in Boca Raton on January 10, 2010 to enjoy some food, music and fun! We will be revealing the next clue to the "BIG BANG" at the reunion so make sure to mark your calendars and be there.

Southeast Bus Travel

Camp Highlander is happy to announce that in addition to our roundtrip bus service from Boca Raton, Florida we are now offering a roundtrip bus service from the Southeast area of the US which includes pick-ups in Baton Rouge, LA; Meridian, MS; Birmingham, AL and Atlanta, GA. We are very excited for this new service and welcome any questions you may have. You can download information and a bus travel form from our website under the forms tab.

Fall in the Mountains

It's a beautiful fall day in the mountains. The sun is shining after days of rain, which has the Mills River running very high (great for tubing if it weren't so cold). Unfortunately the rain has also blown most of the colorful leaves to the ground. Lots of raking to do around camp! What's so wonderful about this time of year is being able to see all the way to the peak of Forge Mountain now that the leaves aren't in the way. And though the trees are bare, there's still something so magical about our mountain home this time of year. If you're in the area, stop by and visit us.

On the Road

We hit the road recruiting new campers this past week, and its been wonderful to see all the smiling faces of our Highlander families. We're headed in many different directions this year to spread the word about Camp Highlander. Remember to check our schedule to see if we'll be in your area and if you are interested in hosting a show just contact the office.

We had our first bit of snow this past weekend in Pisgah. Nothing on camp, but we promise to take pictures just as soon as there is. We are actually in the process of taking pictures of all the beautiful fall colors so stay tuned to the website for those.

And many have asked about the our camp horses and how they are doing. Our two babies are getting so big and are a fun handful. They are out in the pastures now, enjoying playing with all the other camp horses. Vicki is taking good care of all of them.

We had such a big turnout for our priority registration and sessions are filling up. Make sure if you haven't applied for the summer of 2010 that you do so soon. And stay tuned to the website for updates on changes to session availability. It appears summer of 2010 is going to be better then ever.

Hope you all read Melissa's article in the newest Campfire Quarterly about the big surprise for 2010. Any ideas? Post them to the website...though we're not sure any of you will ever guess this surprise.
